Carl Markert is responsible for performing the functions necessary to inform the NuScale design from an operations and maintenance perspective, as well as, for developing a plant services business to provide services for the effective startup and operation of NuScale power plants. Markert brings NuScale over 36 years of experience in the nuclear industry with an extensive background in engineering, safety analysis, operations, maintenance, construction, startup, and training.
Markert joined NuScale from URENCO USA, where he was the Operations Manager and Plant Engineering Manager. As the Operations Manager, he established the operations organization and led operations through initial operator training and certification, plant commissioning and startup, and successful operation of the uranium enrichment facility. As the Engineering Manager, he managed systems engineering, design engineering, criticality safety engineering, and integrated safety analysis. Prior to URENCO USA, Markert worked for the Nebraska Public Power District where he received a senior reactor operator license and held management positions in the engineering and maintenance departments.
Markert began his career in the U.S. Navy as a nuclear submarine officer. He was part of the construction, commissioning, and startup crew for a fast attack nuclear submarine and later served as the Engineering Officer on a Trident ballistic missile submarine.
A graduate from Texas A&M University with B.S. in Nuclear Engineering, Markert also holds an M.B.A from the Mays Business School at Texas A&M.
