Calling Tomorrow's Nuclear Engineers: Oregon Internship for Sheffield's Brightest

LONDON, UK – NuScale Power will be promoting exclusive 2016 summer internship opportunities for students at the University of Sheffield Engineering Graduate Recruitment & Placement Fair taking place on Wednesday and Thursday this week (4 and 5 November).

The internship programme – offered in partnership with Oregon State University and the University of Sheffield – will provide students with fully funded research placements at NuScale’s operational base in Corvallis, Oregon where the company is developing ground breaking small modular reactor (SMR) technology. Interns will work on a variety of research and development projects in Corvallis and at the OSU Department of Nuclear Engineering and Radiation Health Physics (NERHP) from June to September 2016.

NuScale nuclear engineer, Renae Lenhof will be attending this week’s event in Sheffield to showcase the opportunity. A former OSU student and intern at NuScale herself, Renae has recently been recruited by the company on a permanent basis. She will be on hand to talk to students about her experiences and provide them with more information about how they can get involved.

Renae Lenhof said:

“This is a fantastic opportunity for students of engineering and physics. The NuScale internship provided me with a valuable first step into an exciting career in nuclear energy. With the prospect of new nuclear power stations being built in the UK, it’s an exciting time for students to consider this as a promising career option.

“I’m hoping to find the next generation of world leading nuclear engineers here in Sheffield.”

NuScale’s attendance at this week’s event adds further weight to the company’s commitment to the UK. In 2014, the company signed an agreement with the Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre, in Sheffield to collaborate on the development of NuScale’s technology and has also been working with the National Nuclear Laboratory on nuclear fuel analysis. NuScale opened its UK office in January 2015 and in October the company launched its UK prospectus, setting out its ambitions for the development and deployment of its technology in the UK.

About NuScale Power, LLC

NuScale Power, LLC is developing a new kind of nuclear plant; a safer, smaller, scalable version of pressurized water reactor technology, designed with natural safety features; a technology initially developed and tested at Oregon State University. Fluor Corporation (NYSE: FLR), a global engineering, procurement, and construction company with a 60-year history in commercial nuclear power, is the majority investor in NuScale. As the sole winner of the second round of the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) competitively-bid, cost-sharing program to develop nuclear small modular reactor (SMR) technology, NuScale's design offers the benefits of carbon-free nuclear power but takes away the issues presented by the cost of installing large capacity. A nuclear power plant using NuScale's technology is comprised of individual NuScale Power Modules™, each producing 50 megawatts of electricity (gross) with its own factory-built combined containment vessel and reactor vessel, and its own packaged turbine-generator set. A power plant can include as many as 12 NuScale Power Modules to produce as much as 600 MWe, gross (570 net, nominal, after house loads). The reactor coolant is driven by natural circulation and can be shut down safely with no operator action, no AC or DC power, and no external water supply. NuScale power plants are scalable - additional modules are added as customer demand for electricity increases. NuScale's technology also is ideally suited to supply energy for district heating, desalination, and other applications. NuScale is headquartered in Portland, Oregon and has offices in Corvallis, OR; Rockville, MD; Charlotte, NC; and London, UK.
