NuScale Power Announces New Members of Technical Advisory Board

PORTLAND, Ore. – NuScale Power announced today that two new members will be joining the NuScale Technical Advisory Board (TAB). New members are Adm. Kirk Donald and Mr. Barry Fletcher. The NuScale TAB is comprised of recognized technical experts in nuclear power plant design, operations, maintenance, regulations, and safety. The TAB is responsible for conducting technology reviews of the company’s design efforts relative to assuring safety and ensuring compliance with existing regulations, industry requirements, and best practices.

“At NuScale, we pride ourselves on the caliber and dedication of our people and this extends to the experts on our advisory boards who play a vital role in our development,” said NuScale CEO John Hopkins. “The experience and counsel that Adm. Donald and Mr. Fletcher bring to NuScale is another sign of our commitment to success in bringing this game-changing energy technology to market.”

Adm. Donald retired from the US Navy in 2013 after nearly 40 years of distinguished service, including serving as Commander of Naval Submarine Forces. His shore assignments include the Pacific Fleet Nuclear Propulsion Examining Board and the staff of the Director, Naval Nuclear Propulsion. He also served at the Bureau of Naval Personnel, on the Joint Staff, and as Deputy Chief of Staff for C4I, Resources, Requirements and Assessments, U.S. Pacific Fleet. In his final assignment, Donald assumed duties as Director, Naval Nuclear Propulsion, on Nov. 5, 2004.

Mr. Fletcher retired in 2016 as Vice President for Nuclear Propulsion for Newport News Shipbuilding, where he directed over 2000 employees responsible for engineering, startup and commissioning of naval nuclear propulsion plants. He joined Newport News in 1979 as an associate engineer and held a number of positions during his career including electrical engineer, nuclear test engineer, chief nuclear test engineer and manager of nuclear test engineering.

Dr. Jose Reyes, Chief Technology Officer for NuScale Power commented, “We are very pleased to have two new additions to our distinguished board. They bring to NuScale a wealth of experience in the engineering, construction, and operation of small nuclear systems.”

Current continuing TAB members include: Dr. Pete Lyons, former Assistant Secretary for the US Department of Energy; Mr. Luis Reyes, former Executive Director of Operations for the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC); Mr. Gary Sozzi, former director of safety services for GE Nuclear; Dr. George Apostolakis, former Commissioner for the NRC; and Mr. Gene Grecheck, former VP of Nuclear Engineering and Development for Dominion Nuclear and past president of the American Nuclear Society.

Previous TAB members include such industry leaders as: Dr. Dale Klein, former Chair of the NRC; Dr. Fred Moody, a pioneer in thermal-hydraulics methods; Dr. Graham Wallis, Dartmouth Thayer School's Sherman Fairchild Professor of Engineering, Emeritus; Mr. John Hosmer, former VP of Engineering for Exelon Nuclear; and Mr. Robert Coward, Principal Officer and Director of MPR.

The NuScale TAB’s next meeting is scheduled for this week in Corvallis, OR.

About NuScale Power, LLC

NuScale Power, LLC is developing a new kind of nuclear plant; a safer, smaller, scalable version of pressurized water reactor technology - a technology initially developed and tested at Oregon State University. Fluor Corporation (NYSE: FLR), a global engineering, procurement, and construction company with a 60-year history in commercial nuclear power, is the majority investor in NuScale. NuScale's design offers the benefits of carbon-free nuclear power and reduces the financial commitments associated with giga-watt size nuclear facilities. NuScale technology is ideally suited across diverse platforms including base load electricity, load-following support for renewables, very high-reliability micro-grids, and process heat or steam for district heating, desalination and industrial uses.

At the heart of our technology is the fully factory fabricated NuScale Power Module™, an integral reactor vessel surrounded by a high pressure steel containment, which when coupled to its factory fabricated power generation equipment can produce 50 megawatts of electricity. A NuScale power plant can house up to 12 of these modules for a total facility output of 600 megawatts (gross). The scalability afforded by the modular design allows customers to incrementally increase facility output to match demand. The NuScale Power Module™ is premised on well-established nuclear technology principles with a focus on integration of components, simplification or elimination of systems, and use of passive safety features resulting in highly reliable operation underpinned by an extremely strong safety case and unparalleled asset protection, making it suitable to be sited at locations closer to where electricity or process heat are needed.

NuScale is headquartered in Portland, Oregon and has offices in Corvallis, OR; Rockville, MD; Charlotte, NC; Richland, WA; and London, UK.
